What is Ayurveda? Ayurveda literally means “life science.” (Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge) and is one of the most powerful mind-body health systems. It is the practice of balance within diet, sleep, and nature in order to be the best and healthiest version of yourself.
The two main principles that Ayurveda stands by is that 1) the mind and the body are inseparably connected, and 2) the mind is the greatest power to heal your body.
Sounds a bit different than Nyquil. Wanting to know the steps of Ayurveda? Look no further.
- Eating a Healthy Diet
Eating healthy is something we should be doing no matter what right? Well it is the number one principle in following Ayurveda. It says to create a plate full of color in which your food identifies a rainbow. Not only that, you must include the six Ayurvedic tastes of sweet, sour, salty, spicy, bitter, and astringent in every meal. The reason is that when you follow all of this you become more satisfied and don’t feel the need to snack or eat junk.
- Getting enough Sleep
This may be one of the hardest for us and we don’t even realize. While we sleep, our body repairs and revives itself. When we don’t sleep enough, our immune system weakens, and even worse, speeds up the aging process. An easy way to know if you are getting enough sleep is if waking up is easy or hard for you in the morning. If you feel energetic when you wake up, then it means you have had enough sleep, if you feel the opposite and tired, you have not had a good sleep.
- “Being in tune with Nature”
This phrase simply means that you should have “healthy desires that match what you actually need.” What you need and what you want should mean the opposite. When you are in the proper Ayurvedic balance, you naturally desire which makes you feel satisfied with life and health and simply do not crave any unhealthy desires or wants. When you slip out of balance, you may start indulging in junk food, don’t sleep well or quit exercising, and take part in unhealthy behaviors.
- Be in contact with your body’s needs
Making choices that balance your life can be very difficult. But sometimes we don’t listen to our own body which messes up our rhythm. You can tell if your body likes something or not with how comfortable you are feeling versus not. This does not mean that we don’t have to do anything in life we don’t want to do or taking healthy risks. The body will never doubt itself and it will always bring you down the path of truth.
- Have a Healthy Digestion
Good balance means good overall health. Good health means that we can completely metabolize what we eat healthily. Digestive energy is also known as agni. When agni is healthy, there is no surprise that we will also have healthy tissues, and eliminate waste properly. On the flip side though, if our agni is damaged, the digestion leads to an overflow of toxins known as ama. When ama builds up in our bodies, it pauses our flow of energy which is the main cause of all diseases.
